Vehicle Window Tint Laws – Colorado

Window Tint Laws and What you Should Know

There are many reasons as to why you would want to tint your vehicle’s windows, but you must also know that there are legal stipulations to the applied window tints in your car. Enacted in 1995, the Colorado tinting law applies to all vehicles and is related directly to Visible Light Transmission or VLT. The VLT describes the amount of visible light from the outside of the car that must be able to pass through the tinted window into the vehicle.

Is your window tint legal? With recent law enforcement activity on the western slope targeting illegal window tint on vehicles, Dent Doctor is offering to help bring your vehicle in compliance with Colorado state tint laws. Come see us for a free estimate. if your tint is illegal we are offering 20% off your total charge to bring your vehicle in compliance with Colorado state laws.

How dark can the window tint darkness be?

In Colorado front side, back side, and rear windows must have more than a 27% VLT. In simpler terms, this means that more than 27% of the light from the sun must be able to pass through these windows. Tinting the windows of your car can be advantageous to you and your passengers and the closest you can typically get to the 27% VLT is 30% VLT. If you have a two door vehicle, you can get away with only tinting the two side windows, but if you have a four-door, remember that any tinting on the side or back windows must also be above the 27% VLT mark. Another combination of tint in a four-door vehicle is varying VLT for front and rear windows. If your car’s front side windows and windshield allow for at least 70% light transmittance, then the windows to the rear of the driver (including the rear window) can be tinted using less than 27% VLT film. For the best protection and advantages of any window in your car, we provide the Llumar CTX Series film. You can read more about this exceptional film on our automotive window tinting page.

Colorado window tinting laws state that a windshield can be tinted, but with stricter requirements than the side and rear windows. Windshield tinting must have a VLT of 70% and must be non-reflective; before you decide that you want to tint your entire windshield, be aware that only the top four inches of the windshield can be tinted.

The Benefits of Window Tinting without the Color Distortion

If you have thought about getting your windows tinted but have reserved opinions due to issues with sight or just not interested in changing the exterior look of your car, we have a fantastic alternative to shaded tint. The AIR Series Window Film by Llumar provides many of the benefits that traditional window-tinting offers, without the window-darkening shade. This film, although entirely clear, can shield against 99% of the harmful UV rays that the sun emits and provides heat protection by reducing interior surface temperatures by at least 26 degrees F. With this UV and heat protection, your car’s interior has additional security from color fading. AIR film can also provide extra protection to factory tinted windows from heat, glare, UV rays, and shattering. So, if you are worried about tinted windows altering your view of the road or the exterior appearance of your car, the AIR Series Window Film by Llumar may be the appropriate choice for you!

Can I add Window Tint Reflection?

If you were thinking about adding a one-way mirror tint to your vehicle’s windows, you are out of luck. Unfortunately, Colorado law prohibits the use of any mirrored or metallic style of window tint on cars.

There are multiple reasons as to why it is illegal to use mirror tint on a vehicle’s windows. The most obvious is that mirror tint can amplify the sun’s glare, which can cause visual impairment to other drivers. Another reason could be for the protection of law enforcement officers. Mirrored tint would not allow an approaching officer to visually assess what is happening in the interior of the car during a traffic stop.

Are there additional laws or regulations?

There are additional laws to consider, when it comes to window tinting in Colorado, to ensure you meet all requirements.

  • Colorado state law does not allow tint to be of the colors AMBER or RED.
  • Typically, only one side mirror and the rear view mirror are required to operate a vehicle in Colorado. If you decided to tint your back window, you must also have BOTH side mirrors attached to the car.
  • Although it is recommended to have, Colorado does not require
  •  stickers to be attached to a window declaring that it meets the legal requirements.

The penalty associated with not meeting state requirements on tinted windows is a Class B traffic infraction. Another penalty one could receive for violating this law is a misdemeanor with a $500-$5000 fine. If you would like to find out more regarding tinting laws, you should contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles or a local law enforcement officer.

Now that you know the law, schedule a 2-Door (three windows), 4-Door (five windows), or SUV/Wagon (seven windows) tinting package and let our professional installers help your vehicle obtain the benefits of window tinting.
